DJ Lagway made headlines on Monday by entering the transfer portal after playing two seasons with Florida. According to reports, Lagway had a falling out with new Gators coach Jon Sumrall and his staff, which prompted the QB’s exit.

On Tuesday, analyst Josh Pate provided some more details on why Lagway’s relationship with Sumrall soured, and the teams that are currently monitoring the QB.

“It’s been pretty widely reported that this was Jon Sumrall and his staff meeting with DJ Lagway, and that meeting sounds like it did not go well,” Pate said on his “College Football Show” podcast. “That meeting sounds like it included a lot of that coaching staff challenging his mental makeup, his competitiveness, his disposition towards football, and it did not provide either party with the warm fuzzies. They left realizing, ‘He’s probably not gonna be our quarterback this year,’ and DJ Lagay left realizing, ‘I’m probably not gonna fit here anymore.’

“So now he’s in the portal. Baylor has been mentioned, Miami has been mentioned, LSU and Louisville. Again, we’re still very early in the process.”

Lagway had a mixed season in 2025. The QB posted an SEC-high 14 interceptions and completed 63.2% of his passes for 2,264 yards with 16 touchdowns as the Gators finished with a 4-8 record.

According to reports from CBS, DJ Lagway had planned to remain in Florida, but changed his mind after falling out with Jon Sumrall.

Lagway enrolled at Florida in 2024. He was touted by the likes of Clemson, USC, Baylor, Texas A&M, and a few other top programs, but reportedly chose to play for the Gators due to his love for the team.

Some have also claimed that Lagway wasn’t hoping to land the QB1 role at Florida. Instead, he was eager to know the new coaching staff’s plans to find a way that could develop his game. However, Lagway reportedly felt like that wasn’t presented by the new Florida coaching staff.
